Bodum 11080-01 Review

Bodum 11080-01 Review by D (IN USA)

This is my third small French press and this has two problems compared to the other two. The water tight, snap-top section must be unsnapped to clean, which I find to be a needless complication. It is preferable to simply pour directly from the carafe and have a simpler cleanup. However, if tipping and spilling is a potential issue, this may be worth the extra trouble.

Secondly, the spring/screen seal with the carafe is poorly constructed vs. my other two. The concept is the same, a spring presses the screen against the sides of the carafe, but the spring in this press is not even around its diameter. This creates soft spots or openings between the screen and carafe allowing grounds to enter the filtered side of the carafe. I have had far more grounds in my coffee with this press with the other two. I'm sure Bodum can do a better job, but my press is terrible in this way. I am throwing it out for this reason alone.

Bodum 11080-01 Review by Michael L. Papadopoulos "Michael L. Papadopoulos" (Jacksonville, FL)

The coffee in our office building is ridiculously terrible. As a result, I was forced to find an alternate solution, and thought I had it in the Melitta Ready Set Joe. However, such a system requires one to run paper filters through with a mug or two of hot water to eliminate the paper taste. This requires extra time at the sink in the break room, which is time I do not need to be spending away from my desk. I then saw this press pot at a HomeGoods store for $10 and picked it up. A quick run to the Starbucks for some coarse-ground beans (my company doesn't let us have grinders/appliances at our desks, citing, "OSHA violations", so I have to take the hit on fresh grounds) and five minutes to microwave-boil some water and I am making excellent coffee at work with a minimal amount of time spent away from my desk. The ease, convenience, and portability of the unit alone gives it a base of three stars.

How is the quality of unit, though? Well, for those who have owned and used Bodum presses, there is nothing new here: same wire mesh filer, same plunger, same sturdy build. Bodum Chambord owners may be a little put-off by the plastic surrounding the beaker, but I can attest that it is built pretty solid. When trying to move the beaker around a few times (with small and moderate force applied, respectively), it would not budge. Furthermore, as previous and current owners of plastic-constructed Bodum presses may know, Bodum uses a non-leaching plastic when making their presses. As a result, I recieve absolutely no polycarbonate taste when dispensing the coffee through the top of the press*. The beaker is thick and has some heft to it as well, for such a seemingly small unit. This is very comforting, considering it will stay in my office and be handwashed at the break room sink; I do not possess any concerns about it breaking upon an accidental slip out of my hands during a wash (at least not if it falls in the sink from six to eight inches high). All in all, solid construction. Exactly what I expect from Bodum.

I definitely recommend this press for anyone who is tired of disgusting office coffee. Look up a guide for how to make good coffee out of a french press (coffeegeek has a great one) and you will not be disappointed.

*If you are still concerned with plastic leaching, boil it in 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol (or cheap vodka) for about half an hour and then run two kettles of hot water over it and through the spout to wash it off, followed by a weak pot of coffee to eliminate any remaining taste interference. I have NOT had to do this with the Bodum Bean press, as I get no plastic-y taste from it, but I did have to do this with the Ready Set Joe and it definitely helped to eliminate the overwhelming plastic-y taste I got from it.

Bodum 11080-01 Review by Kate

I ordered this french press because I wanted an alternative to the particularly foul coffee provided by my office. It's absolutely perfect, brews almost exactly one full mug, and the red color is lovely. There's really minimal clean up because it's so small, and I really like the locking lid. I recommend this french press to anyone who needs better coffee at work!
